Subject Description:
The Business of Television and Film is designed to give students an understanding of how the
film and broadcast industry operates. Contracts, Royalties, Unions (SAG, AFTRA), Major Motion
Picture Studios, Film Festivals, and Distribution are topics discussed.
Performance Objectives:
Introduce students into basic practices and protocols in the film, video and broadcast business.
Explore revenue potential for Independent film and video projects.
Introduction to the television industry, networks, cable and independent syndication.
Introduction to the corporate and industrial video industry and the employment opportunities
both in-house and as a freelance video producer.

Week 1: An overview of studio and independent film industries
Week 2: Above the line and below the line budgeting
Week 3: Contracts, distributors, film festivals, grants
Week 4: Networks, cable, satellite, broadcast ratings system, syndication
Week 5: Online distribution
Week 6: Intellectual property rights, paymasters, residuals and point
