Subject Description:
Audio Engineering and Studio Techniques combines lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on lab
time to provide the beginning student with a base knowledge of recording procedures, techniques,
and Pro Tools software installation and use. Students will receive instruction in preparation for
Pro Tools 101 and Pro Tools 110 certification.
Subject Hours: 16 credit hours (132 classroom hours, 66 lab project hours)
Performance Objectives:
After completing this class a student should be able to:
Define basic audio terms and concepts.
Describe the differences between the different types of microphones.
Describe the different sections of a mixing console.
Correctly connect and route audio signals through a recording system including microphone
connection, console, monitor system and signal processors.
Describe, connect and use basic signal processors including compressors, gates, EQ,
reverb and delay units.
Use a digital audio workstation to produce a multi-element sound track.
• Completion of Pro Tools Certification exams PTS101 and PTS110.
• Receive a score of 90% or better on Pro Tools 101 and Pro Tools 110 exams.

Week 5: Recording Procedures and Techniques
Week 6: Recording Procedures and Techniques
Week 7: Mixing and Automation
Week 8: Pro Tools Configurations and File Management
Week 9: Technical and Maintenance Issues, LRC Project Due
Week 10: MIDI Basics, Reason
Week 11: Review, Skills Tests, and Final Exam

A score of 70 on the final Skills Test is required to pass the class.
